Mission

Helping businesses build profitable greenhouse farming projects worldwide.

Aegis was founded in 2012 by engineers and project managers who had spent years watching good greenhouse concepts fail during execution. The pattern was consistent: technology chosen from a brochure, quotes compared on price rather than scope, and coordination gaps discovered only after construction had started.

We built the company to close that gap. Aegis sits on the client side of the table, translating market and climate data into a defensible technical specification, then holding the supplier chain to it through fabrication, installation and commissioning.

Today we support commercial greenhouse projects on five continents, from 5,000 m²specialist facilities to phased programmes of 50 hectares.

Track record

14 years of greenhouse projects, documented

Experience only counts if it can be checked. Every stage below changed how we work, and the case studies that came out of it are published in full.

  1. 2012

    Founded in Rotterdam

Aegis starts as a two-person specification and tender desk for Dutch growers expanding abroad, working only on the client side of the table.

  2. 2015

    First multi-hectare turnkey coordination

The scope widens from written specifications to full execution coordination: one master schedule, one document register, one accountable coordinator on site.

  3. 2018

Middle East office opens in Dubai

Desert cooling, water reuse and high-radiation glazing strategies become a standing part of the engineering desk after repeat Gulf projects.

  4. 2021

Energy modelling becomes a standard deliverable

Energy cost per kilogram replaces cost per square metre as the primary comparison metric in every feasibility model we issue.

  5. 2023

Asia Pacific office opens in Singapore

Regional supplier auditing and logistics coordination move closer to the fabrication base for projects across Asia Pacific.

Published portfolio: 6 case studies covering 46.7 hectares across 6 countries and 5 climate regions (Europe, Middle East, South America, Central Asia, Africa), with crop programmes for tomato, strawberry, lettuce, herbs and others. Review the case studies.

Expertise

Three desks, each accountable for its own decisions

Aegis is organised around the three disciplines a greenhouse investment actually needs. The same desks that make project decisions write the guidance we publish.

Aegis Project Engineering

Structural and climate engineering desk

The engineering desk writes the technical specifications behind Aegis projects, covering structures, glazing, climate systems and irrigation. The team reviews supplier designs against local load codes and measured site climate data rather than reference-project assumptions.

  • Structural specification
  • Climate strategy
  • Glazing selection
  • Irrigation design

Aegis Investment Advisory

Feasibility and capital planning desk

The advisory desk builds the feasibility and capital models that Aegis clients present to boards and lenders. Work focuses on cost per square metre, energy cost per kilogram, phased capital deployment and the assumptions that determine whether a project is financeable.

  • Feasibility modelling
  • Capital planning
  • Energy economics
  • Risk assessment

Aegis Horticulture Advisory

Crop and production strategy desk

The horticulture desk matches crop programmes to climate, market window and the technology package each crop requires. The team plans first crop cycles, climate set points and operator training for facilities entering production.

  • Crop selection
  • Production planning
  • Hydroponic systems
  • Operator training

Scope boundaries

What Aegis does, and what it deliberately does not

Independence is a structure, not a promise. These boundaries are what make our supplier recommendations worth reading.

We do

  • Write performance-based technical specifications the client owns
  • Model production, energy and capital together before technology is chosen
  • Qualify, tender and level suppliers against identical scope
  • Coordinate manufacturing, civil works, installation and commissioning
  • Verify installed work against specification before milestone payments

We do not

  • Manufacture structures, glazing, screens or climate equipment
  • Hold exclusive distribution or dealership agreements
  • Accept commissions, rebates or referral fees from suppliers
  • Operate the facility or employ the grower team after handover
  • Guarantee yields that depend on the client operating team

Standards we specify to

The codes behind every specification we issue

Aegis is not a certification body. These are the frameworks our specifications reference and our reviews hold suppliers to, verified per jurisdiction during discovery.

EN 13031-1

Commercial greenhouse structures: design and construction requirements for Class A and Class B structures.

Eurocode 1 / 3

Wind, snow and imposed load actions plus steel design verification for structural review of supplier drawings.

NEN 3859

Dutch reference practice for greenhouse construction loads, applied where local codes are silent or incomplete.

GlobalG.A.P.

Facility and hygiene requirements designed in early, so retail audits do not force retrofits after handover.

ISO 14644 principles

Applied selectively to propagation and processing rooms where airborne contamination affects crop quality.

Local permitting codes

Fire, drainage, water discharge and light-emission rules verified per jurisdiction during discovery.

Editorial standards

How we produce published guidance

  • Every article is written by the Aegis desk that does that work: engineering, investment advisory or horticulture advisory.
  • Cost and yield ranges are stated as ranges with their assumptions, and are reviewed against current tender data before publication.
  • We publish the exclusions and failure modes as well as the benchmarks, because those are what break budgets.
  • We do not accept paid placements, supplier sponsorship or affiliate arrangements in editorial content.
  • Pages carry a published and updated date, and are revised when supplier pricing or standards move materially.

Operating principles

Four rules that shape every engagement

These are the commitments clients can hold us to, regardless of project size or region.

The investor is the client

Every recommendation is written for the party carrying the capital risk, not for the party supplying the steel. No supplier commissions, no exclusive distribution agreements.

Specify before you shop

A written specification with performance criteria turns three incomparable quotes into one commercial decision. It is the cheapest risk reduction available in a greenhouse project.

Model the operation, not the building

Yield per square metre, energy per kilogram and labour hours per kilogram decide whether a facility earns. Capital cost is only one input into those three numbers.

Document every decision

Specifications, bid comparisons, interface matrices and change logs stay with the client, so the project remains auditable and transferable.

FAQ

About our role in your project

Is Aegis a greenhouse manufacturer or a consultancy?

Aegis is an independent solutions partner. We engineer specifications and coordinate qualified manufacturers and installers, but we do not fabricate structures. That separation is what keeps supplier selection objective.

Why work with an independent partner instead of a manufacturer directly?

A manufacturer optimises for its own product range. An independent partner optimises for your production and financial targets, then selects the manufacturer whose product actually fits those targets.

What languages and regions does the team cover?

Our project teams work in English, Dutch, Arabic and Spanish, with offices in Rotterdam, Dubai and Singapore supporting projects across Europe, the Middle East, Asia Pacific, Africa and the Americas.

Which standards does Aegis specify against?

Structures are specified and reviewed against EN 13031-1 with Eurocode 1 and 3 load and steel verification, supplemented by NEN 3859 practice where local codes are incomplete. Facility layout accounts for GlobalG.A.P. requirements and local fire, drainage and light-emission permitting rules. These are design inputs we hold suppliers to, not certifications held by Aegis.

How is your published guidance produced?

Each article and resource is written by the desk that performs the work: engineering, investment advisory or horticulture advisory. Cost and yield figures are published as ranges with their assumptions, reviewed against current tender data, and updated when pricing or standards move. We accept no supplier sponsorship in editorial content.

Can we verify your project experience?

Yes. Published case studies state area, crop, system and outcome for each facility, and reference calls with comparable projects are arranged during the proposal stage subject to client confidentiality.
